Días de Santiago (Days of Santiago) - Peru

Directed by Josué Méndez, Días de Santiago is about a young man trained for nothing but fighting that finds himself back in normal life after service in the army. Skillfully interweaving black and white and colour footage in a way that both heightens the film's realism and the sense of despair and frustration of his protagonist, this young Peruvian director makes very palpable the way the young man's training has circumscribed his life. A close and following camera, tight compositions and an intermittent voice-over, positions the audience close to our hero, and the frustration, anger and tragedy of the situation is brought vividly to life.

In 1944 fascist Spain, a girl, fascinated with fairy-tales, is sent along with her pregnant mother to live with her new stepfather, a ruthless captain of the Spanish army. During the night, she meets a fairy who takes her to an old faun in the center of the labyrinth. He tells her she's a princess, but must prove her royalty by surviving three gruesome tasks. If she fails, she will never prove herself to be the true princess and will never see her real father, the king, again.

Todo el poder (Gimme Power) - México

Directed by Fernando Sariñana, Todo el poder centers around the politics and corruption that shroud the Mexican police system. Featuring Demián Bichir as Gabriel, a filmmaker whose career has left him assaulted and robbed in broad daylight more times than he cares to remember, the film itself was inspired by Sariñana's personal experience with urban crime oftentimes perpetrated by the police themselves (Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide).

Historias de fútbol (Soccer Stories) - Chile

Historias de fútbol portrays the life, love, and passion involved in soccer, one of the twentieth century’s most important rituals, through the lives of three different characters. The star player of a small neighborhood team from Santiago de Chile is offered a bribe and the possibility of playing professional football. A boy from Northern Chile wins a classic neighborhood pichanga football contest. In the process, however, he loses the few pesos he had gained from pawning one of his mother’s last items of value. A kid from the city finds himself stranded in a remote corner of the southern island of Chiloé on the day of the World Cup qualifying match for the Chilean National team. The only television in the area is at the house of the old Serón sisters, where the kid finds himself in the middle of more than he bargained for.
